But what are these beasties? Dead Squad: Temple of the Undead is a full-fledged assault on your brain, particularly the pleasure center parts that produce serotonin and dopamine. They spontaneously decide to go rafting down a serene river to take in the sights. What money was saved on script writing and decent actors was spent on effects which are impressive enough for a film that is found lacking in almost every other department. You get whole skeletons yanked out of bodies through the stomach, heads ripped off and bunted about, one memorable death involving a gun fired from point-blank at the crotch all the way out the skull, limbs whipped off and munched, and chunky salsa gore all over. Turns out the temple is a secret base where the Nazi experiments were happening. . The other strong point is the action and kills level turned up to eleven.
Well, we the audience, we get the connection. This is not the movie for deep story and philosophical reflection. Maybe it has something to do with the Nazi scientist from the flashback? It turns out we have another one of those wacky on our hands, doing experiments on human subjects which, no surprise, cause an outbreak of mutant zombies. I'm going to go have a kitten sandwich. The script could have been a lot better — nobody has anything very memorable to say, and the plot is one big excuse for the action. And then their boat floats away or did it? I mean just look at the title for goodness sake! It is great cannon fodder viewing for binge watching. When the Nazi mutant zombies start appearing, it turns into exactly the movie you were expecting with just enough odd wrinkles to keep it interesting. The ending contains an entirely unnecessary twist.
This comes complete with a love triangle between zombies. Well they go rafting in the jungles of Bali and as is always the case, take a detour off the main path. Dead Squad: Temple of the Undead, with its also unnecessarily cumbersome title, is pretty much worthless. The rest of the film is straightforward enough with the group deciding to explore the inside of the temple only to get attacked by a horde of zombies. Remember - there's no need not to be critical.
There is a hierarchy in their lair which is at least something a little different for the zombie genre. They begin to disappear, one by one, but at least a couple of them get in some rumpus beforehand. The entire scene is shot in black and white with just a tiny splash of color — see if you can guess which color — and the effect is magnificent and provocative. It seems to me that most of the budget for Dead Squad: Temple of the Undead was allocated to that flashback scene, with a bit more for some good costumes and makeup, and not one penny toward acting lessons for any of the apparent neophytes in this bunch. Action, Blood, Guts, and Gore! A garden-variety evil Nazi scientist, now in the employ of the Americans, injects a soldier with a super-secret super serum. And along come a raft full of teens on vacation.
For an indie production, Dead Squad boasts great sets, tons of gore, lots of action, cool fight stunts, and a pace that will have your thumbs twitching as they reflexively seek controller buttons to punch. This cast is every horror character trope possible. The film opens with a brilliant seriously flashback sequence taking place in the 1950s. I think I might have found these stereotypes bearable, even relatable, if any of the actors possessed even an iota of talent. Dead Squad: Temple of the Undead is an action-survival horror that will remind you a lot of the series. If the above sounds like a fun popcorn muncher, you are correct.
