Incredible photography,great concepts, funny dialogs and good casting. But, it fails to entertain and leaves the average Malayali viewer dumbstruck, wondering what they had just witnessed. Inspite of the technical expertise in sound and editing detailings, as well as the quirky costumes, there is too much madness in the narrative which leaves you befuddled. Most of Double Barrel is set in Goa, and the story per se is irrelevant, as it gets submerged in a deluge of characters, each more flamboyant than the other. I'm certainly not against spoofs, or gangster spoofs for that matter, and was all set to get fired at, when 'Double Barrel' springs a surprise on me, by coming up with a tale that goes leaden within minutes. The rest of the characters including Arya and Asif Ali makes you wonder what they are doing in it. Though there is a certain charm in which a novel style has been attempted in Double Barrel, the film fails to engage as with Lijo's previous movie 'Amen'. As the tagline suggests, there is no mortal combat, only guns, and all through, they shoot each other in a manner never before seen in a Malayalam movie. Pulp fictionesque quirkiness was promised in 'Double Barrel', yet the narrative appeared too caricatured, with characters loud mouthing and laughing in obsessive abandon.
This includes all of it I think. They agree and ask for a week's time to arrange the money. The stunning frames that Abhinandan Ramanujan has come up that build up a Tarantinoesque air, are totally lost in this melee, and Prasanth Pillai's musical score is jammed in at the most mistimed moments. Prithviraj and Indrajith has done this experimental role as best as they could, given the lack of references. Flawless cinematography and visual effects are on a par with that of any Hollywood flick. As the filmmaker himself has admitted, the film is an experiment in Malayalam — a gangster comedy. There is this precious gem, Laila Majnu, which gets value only together to the tune of 100 cr. Characters played by Indrajith and Prithviraj have comparatively more screen time than others, and while the former manages to carry off clownish antics, a sniggering Prithviraj definitely looks odd.
Catchy songs composed by Prashant Pillai seem out of this world and come across as a relief. My experience is that each frame of this movie is colorful. What ensues is a battle to obtain their possession by different gangs, among who are Russians as well as a local gang from Thrissur. Being a self-confessed admirer of the Lijo brand of film making, I should say 'Double Barrel' was a shot totally off the mark for me. Its an absolutely great attempt at a genre that was hitherto unheard in the industry. Double Barrel, also known as Iratta Kuzhal, is an upcoming Malayalam comedy thriller film written and directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery. The detail is incredible can't lift my eyes. However, the movie goes a few steps ahead and starts resembling a disconnected series of hallucinations and dream sequences randomly put together.
