I rotated the pinion and provided drag on the ring gear with my other hand to achieve the contact pattern. I was able to wiggle my yoke up and down and in and out, so i knew my bearings were shot. Just be careful and make sure that the stud is driven in straight. Step-27: Tighten Adjuster Nuts Lightly tighten the adjuster nuts. .
One discovery was the transmission place i used had basically scammed me, this required me to learn about transmissions and make repairs myself. Note the hole on the top of the flange. These bolts may need to be removed later to adjust the pinion cartridge shim. Here is a clearer shot of the timing marks on the original gear set. This is a four-pinion carrier, which is a bit of a misnomer, as there are really only three pinions: two short and one long.
You could also convert to a solid pinion spacer instead of a crush sleeve, you may need to do this with really low ratios and you may need to convert to a dayton a pinion support with larger bearings. If you over shoot spec on the pre-load you must take it all apart install a new crush sleeve and start over. Remove the pinion cartridge bolts one last time to apply thread sealant. More power than that and the differential cover is prone to cracking along the ring gear bolts around the full circumference of the unit. If they discover no surprises figure 4 hours labor. The bolts have washers under the heads.
Before driving the seal into place, make sure that it is not tipped. Torque them in stages to a final torque of 65 ft-lbs. What you do is install the nut on the end with the yoke and tighten it down. I highly recommend checking out the bad shoe site and ordering his videos they are amazing. This was the cause of my 'water flowing' noise that started me down this path of rebuilding my axle mechanically not cosmetically. How this all started: in 2007 i went through an extensive rebuild of my car in an effort to make it road worthy.
At this point with time on my hands I cleaned up my Axles, discovered one wheel bearing was no good and replaced both wheel bearings and retainers. Be very careful to make sure that the cap lines up with the adjuster nut threads and tighten the bolts in place. Plus, you also add the necessary bearings, seals, and shims. The bearing comes pre-assembled left with a pre-lubed bearing and seal as one unit plus the axle-retaining ring. It is possible to get a defective gear set. And it's easy to accidentally over shoot pre-load that way. As evidence take my original posi, it was damaged beyond repair due to incompetence in the past.
To have somebody else install the gear set with profit. With our kit in hand, we rebuilt a four-pinion, 28-spline Trac-Lok differential in a few hours. I recommend applying thread sealant to the caliper bolts before they are installed right. At the time my inspection of the Case led me to believe the unit could be saved. Most of that is in labor, now if the rear is really damaged then the cost can skyrocket due to replacing bearing chases, if they find damage inside the differential then the labor costs will increase again. I will insert this into the other side gear.
I took the opportunity to upgrade: the old posi was a thin walled 2 gear 28 spline traction lock with the weakest known clutch pack housing and it was over 35 years old. Inspection of the bare 3rd member case, all cleaned up, you want to check for any cracks in the case, i was lucky my case housing looked to be in good shape. I checked bearing play and it seemed stable enough to look at the ring gear run-out.
Finally i make the clearance i need. This preload causes the outer diameter of the seal to expand and seal into the housing. These materials help prevent oil from slowly seeping under the nut. My mesh pattern was centered a little high on the tooth. The pinion portion of the 3rd member is now 100% complete. Now you can proceed to the axle housing assembly process. I was encouraged by friends since I was already pulling the engine out that it was a good idea to freshen up my transmission and 3rd member.
The Case showed deep tool marks and further damage. Step-10: Apply Grease on Seal Place a coat of lithium-based grease on the seal as well as on the inside of the housing ends left. Take extra care to make sure that the threads are lined up correctly. On the right, the shim is hanging on the spline but it needs to go all the way down the pinion shaft and line up with the solid spacer. Offer excludes truck freight and oversize fees. Then perform a pattern check.
Valid on orders shipped in the contiguous United States. A magnet has been epoxied to the inside of the case, which is a great idea to keep any debris from circulating through the axle. The shim goes against the back of the clutch hub, with the clutch pack being dogged to the cover by ears and half-round locks, and locked to the side gear with teeth. Then check the pattern again. The final torque specification for these bolts is 35 ft-lbs. Coat both sides of the discs liberally and soak them for at least an hour.
